More than 18 million people in the US have early age-related macular degeneration (AMD), facing the uncertainty of a future shaped by vision loss. It is the leading cause of blindness in people over the age of 55 in developed countries.
In 2005, three groups of researchers, including a team funded by the Foundation, discovered that a gene called Complement Factor H is linked to at least 50 percent of all cases of AMD. Researchers have since identified several more genes connected to the disease, and that work continues to shape how new treatments are developed.
